Culture in Sofia

Five centuries of struggle against Ottoman rule taught Bulgarians to value life and freedom above all else. Nevertheless, they have succeeded in keeping their natural tolerance of those who are different; even in the very centre of Sofia you can see a church, a mosque, and a synagogue right next to each other. The entire Bulgarian culture is governed by these principles of freedom and tolerance. Bulgaria is considered a poor country and although Sofia might not have the riches of the Western capitals, it has its own natural charm and ancient culture worth exploring.

The Bulgarian art society consists of talented painters, writers, magnificent poets and crafters whose works are displayed in the many galleries and museums both in the cities and smaller towns of the country. The carvings of highly contemplative monks can be found in monastery museums throughout Bulgaria. Worth mentioning are some astonishing paintings of saints which are roughly the size of a grain of rice! It's not all roses, however. When we talk about Bulgarian poets, for example, a sad pattern comes to mind: although their works are beautiful and inspiring, many of Bulgaria's finest suffered violent and untimely deaths. On a slightly lighter note, there has recently been some buzz surrounding modern versions of traditional Bulgarian music. While pop music is just about the same everywhere, groups such as Mysterious Voices Of Bulgaria - who have taken Bulgaria’s polyphonic female choir to a world audience - have ignited international interest in Bulgarian folk music.
