Archaeological Museum

Founded in 1892, this is the oldest museum in Bulgaria, which is fitting given the subject matter! Containing over 55,000 monuments and a staggering 1.3 million coins, you can spend an entire day here marvelling at the ancient artefacts which reflect the turbulent history of the country. The exhibits on medieval Bulgarian cities are particularly interesting, as is the area focussing on more recent (well, between 7th and 17th century!) history.

Archaeological Museum

"Absolutely fascinating museum. Its treasures rival those of the British Museum or the Met in New York but with the added advantage that they are all from within Bulgaria! The Stone Age, Late Bronze Age and Thracian/Roman artifacts were particularly oustanding."
