Sofia Shows Unseen Thracian Gold from Plovdiv
The heaviest solid-gold Thracian breastplate ever found on the Balkans was put on display in Sofia Wednesday.
The unique piece - weighting 250 grams of pure gold - is part of a collection of previously unseen Thracian gold from Plovdiv.
An armour plate with a gold ornament portraying Medusa Gorgona, the Greek goddess of horror, is yet another fascinating object at the exhibition.
Visitors will be able to see a total of 150 objects at the National History Museum.
The toreutic masterpieces were discovered in 2001 near the village of Kaloyanovo, just outside Plovdiv. The treasure belonged to a Thracian king who lived during the 5th century B.C.
